West Liberty-Salem’s girls basketball team used a key second-quarter effort to capture a Division III sectional championship Saturday at Franklin-Monroe High School.
The second-seeded Tigers battled past fourth-seeded Northwestern after a using a 21-3 scoring burst in the second quarter to spur a 57-41 victory.
“We played really well and had a great first half,” said WL-Salem head coach Dennis McIntosh. “Defensively, we did what we needed to do and offensively we shot the ball pretty well.”
WL-Salem now plays in the district finals at 3 p.m. Saturday against Madeira (22-3) at Springfield High School.
The two teams were tied 12-12 after the opening quarter. The Tigers found a surge of momentum in the second quarter and went on a 21-3 run, which vaulted them to a 33-15 advantage at halftime.
“Our defense got quite a few turnovers and we were able to convert those into baskets,” said McIntosh. “We got them when they were down and they just got flustered. They forced some things and we were able to take advantage of it.”
The Warriors outscored the Tigers 12-10 in the third quarter, but still trailed 43-27.
WL-Salem stayed in control in the final quarter to seal the victory.
Jamie Peterson sparked the Tigers with a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Lily Yoder led the team in scoring with 17 points and Mikalia McIntosh had 12 points, five assists and four steals.
“Lily and Jamie have been playing well the whole tournament,” said McIntosh. “Mikalia has been playing well too and helped open some things up for us.
“The whole team on defense has been great and creating pressure. We didn’t get many offensive rebounds, so that was a big key for us to keep them off the boards.”
