Benjamin Logan High School students had the opportunity during their lunches Thursday to partake in a tasty kick-off event for the district’s new Growing Gardens, Growing Minds Toward a Healthy Future program that is made possible through the receipt of a $10,000 Mary Rutan Foundation Community Health & Wellness Grant.

Global Foods students under the direction of Lois Stoll created a sausage white bean and kale soup for fellow pupils to sample during their lunches, after utilizing grant dollars to purchase the ingredients for the soup.
Sally Stolly, director of curriculum and gifted services, said this is the start to a number of produce-growing and healthy-eating initiatives to be launched at each of the district buildings this school year, including raised bed gardens that will be installed at the elementary school, middle school and high school.
“We’re looking forward to all of the opportunities that will be afforded by the grant, including the many health benefits for students and staff that come with consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables, including improved mental health and well-being,” Mrs. Stolly said.
“We anticipate that this will be an on-going program continuing after this school year, and will be seeking out additional sources of funding to keep it going. We love that all of our staff and students can be involved from all grade levels, and it’s exciting to have this chance to do a project like this as a district to bring everyone together.”
