CASE |
Jesse Case, 27, of 817 Heritage Court, Apt. 66, was arrested and charged with theft, possession of drug abuse instruments and later of conveyance of drugs into a detention facility, after a suspected theft from Wal-Mart and possession of drugs at the Logan County Jail.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department were dispatched about about 9:45 a.m. Sunday to the area of U.S. Route 68 near the U.S. Route 33 interchange by deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office who told police officers a traffic stop was initiated on a vehicle matching the description of multiple thefts from Wal-Mart on Aug. 3.
Sheriff’s deputies told police the suspects were called in by witnesses for reckless driving.
The suspect was in the passenger seat of a vehicle operated by Jennifer McIntosh, according to a police report.
The suspect acknowledged past thefts from the retail store, but denied having stolen anything in recent days.
The blue pickup truck the suspect was traveling in matched the description of surveillance video from Wal-Mart, police report.
A search of the vehicle by sheriff’s deputies turned up multiple hypodermic needles, along with a spoon.
Case was charged with theft, as well as possession of drug abuse instruments and was transported to the jail. As he was being checked into jail, deputies located and seized a white ball of suspected heroin, which was sent to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation for identification.
As officers completed booking paperwork on the suspect, corrections staff at the jail reported that Case was experiencing “heroin intoxication symptoms,” could not be currently lodged in jail and instead needed to be transported to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment.
Officers were advised a short time later the suspect fled the hospital emergency room on foot. He was eventually located at 547 E. Columbus Ave., Apt. 23, and was returned to jail without further incident.
Incident reports have been forwarded to the Bellefontaine Municipal Court, and to Logan County Prosecutor’s Office for review of additional charges.
