Troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are currently investigating a non-injury plane crash that occurred about 4:10 p.m. Tuesday at the Bellefontaine Regional Airport, 3100 State Route 47.
The Diamond DA42 twin engine airplane, piloted by certified flight instructor, Dereck Pristas, 37, of Xenia, and a student pilot, Matthew Schroeder, 60, of Grand Rapids, Mich., lost power while departing the airport. Neither the flight instructor nor the student pilot reported any injuries.
After losing power to both the right and left engines, the pilots were able to take corrective action and stabilize the plane. The pilots were able to land the plane several thousand feet past the runway. The plane struck a fence and came to rest at the edge of the airport property.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Bellefontaine Fire Department, Bellefontaine EMS and Bellefontaine Police Department.
The crash remains under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will be responding to the scene.
