Joseph Childress Junior, 28, of Lima, was charged with felony possession of drugs and possession of marijuana following a Friday evening traffic stop.
Officers of the Washington Township Police Department on patrol about 9:45 p.m. in the area of Main and Wilgus in Russells Point observed a Jeep operated by a driver known to have an expired license.
Officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and while speaking with the driver, officers detected the odor of raw marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver advised officers he had marijuana inside the vehicle.
The driver consented to a search of the vehicle. During the conversation with the driver, officers noticed the passenger, Childress, reaching into his pants pocket and he was asked to exit the vehicle.
When asked if he had anything illegal on his person, Childress handed officers a bag of marijuana and stated that’s all he had. While conducting a search on the passenger side of the vehicle, officers located a plastic baggie with a white crystal substance on the ground outside the passenger door. When officers confronted Childress about the suspected methamphetamine, he admitted the drug belonged to him.
The defendant was arrested and transported to the Logan County Jail.
