HAW |
David Haw, a Bellefontaine City First Ward councilman for 20 years, died Saturday after years of failing health. He was 61.
“I’m not sure what the record books will reflect,” said Mayor Ben Stahler, “but being elected by your community for 10 consecutive terms may say it all.
“Dave was active in many of our community’s activities from the football field to the legislative table.
“He will long be remembered for his efforts to make Bellefontaine a better community. Dave often ‘championed’ causes that might have easily been overlooked by others.”
Zeb Wagner, who displaced Mr. Haw in the 2015 election, reported last Tuesday that Mr. Haw’s health had worsened.
Mr. Wagner said the former councilman has been gracious to the rookie councilman in the months following the election and he appreciated Mr. Haw’s insights and experience.
Mr. Haw was at times a lone voice on the council. He strongly opposed efforts to build the Bellefontaine Regional Airport and pushed for significant increases in the pay for council members.
He felt better pay would attract more candidates for city offices.
With several friends, he co-founded and also coached the Little Chiefs Football program and later served as president of the organization.
Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home and Cremation Center. His funeral is at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
