“We didn’t have a bad day, but it wasn’t necessarily a good day either,” said BHS head coach Aaron LaBatt. “We felt we had the opportunity to earn some hardware. In the end, though, we weren’t able to get the job done. We beat who we should have and lost the teams we should have. We were hoping to do better than that.”
Yorktown High School of Indiana dominated the field with a 5-0 record to claim the tournament championship.
New Lexington, which won last year’s tournament, finished as runner-up with a 4-1 record. The Chieftains came in third with a 3-2 record.
Bellefontaine won its first dual 60-14 over Northridge, but then lost to a talented Yorktown team 63-12.
The Chieftains bounced back with a 58-18 win over Springfield in the third round and lost to New Lexington 51-21 in the fourth round. BHS closed out the day with a 48-36 win over Canal Winchester.
“Yorktown was as advertised,” said LaBatt. “They have a very good team. They are state ranked in Indiana and dominated everyone they faced here. Coach (Jordy) Buck and I felt we got punched in the mouth a little bit by them and we went flat after that. We know we are a better team than how we performed.”
