If an opening-day performance is any indication of what is to come, the Division III regional track and field meet at Troy is going to be highly successful for West Liberty-Salem’s girls team and Riverside’s Caleb Stevens.
The Tiger girls reached the finals in four of their five events and set a new school record.
Stevens also had a big night by reaching the finals in both of his events.
The top eight times in each running event advanced to Friday’s finals, which are set to begin at 6 p.m. The top four placers in each event qualify to the Division III state meet next week in Columbus.
For the WL-S girls, the night was highlighted by the 1,600 relay team of Leah Cole, Caylee Karg, Taylor Lauck and Janie Kopus, which set a new school record with a time of 4:06.65. That time also qualified them to Friday’s finals and has them sitting third overall.
Returning state placer Morgan Freyhof also reached the finals in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.21, Kopus advanced to the finals of the 400 with a time of 1:00.18 and Karg advanced to the finals of the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.24.
Riverside’s Stevens had a pair of big performances during Wednesday’s semifinal races. The sophomore, who played baseball for the Pirates this spring and did not join the track squad until two weeks ago, qualified to the finals in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.
