A man and woman were lodged Tuesday in the Logan County Jail on warrants and drug charges after a 9:10 p.m. traffic stop in the 300 block of south Elm Street.
Jeremy Ray Stevens, 41, at large, was served warrants for failure to appear and violating community control while Crystal D. Stevens, 27, at large, was lodged on charges felony charges of trafficking drugs, possession of methamphetamine, tampering with evidence and possession of prescription drugs.
An officer of the Bellefontaine Police Department was on patrol in the area of Water Avenue and Detroit Street when he observed a red sedan operated by Jeremy Stevens come to a stop past a painted stop bar on the pavement.
A records check indicated the motorist was wanted on warrants and he was taken into custody. The officer also was aware Crystal Stevens had multiple pending drug cases and he asked both if there was anything illegal in the car.
The department’s K-9 Unit had arrived on scene and conducted an external check of the car. Police dog Boodik reportedly alerted while checking the vehicle. Officers then conducted a probable cause search of the car.
Methamphetamine was found in the bottom of Crystal Steven’s bag which was at her feet when she was in the car. Multiple hypodermic syringes were found in a bookbag that contained a debit card with the woman’s name.
She admitted the bag and needles were hers. After she was arrested, she admitted that there was additional methamphetamine in her clothing.
In all, officers recovered approximately 0.2 ounces of methamphetamine.
She was transported to jail and removed from the cruiser. When officers checked the rear seat, they found dissolvable strips of an opioid treatment drug on the seat.
An inside cruiser camera recorded the suspect remove items from her pockets and then reach into the front and back of her pants.
Additional prescription pills were found inside a mat of her holding cell which had been ripped open.
The case has been referred to the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office.
