A West Mansfield teen was charged Saturday with impersonating a police officer related to an incident where he allegedly attempted to conduct a traffic stop Jan. 1.
Tony Beverly, 18, of 261 N. Main St., West Mansfield, was lodged in the Logan County Jail Saturday evening after deputies spoke with him at his residence.
Deputies received the report about the incident about 4:30 p.m. Jan. 1 from Devin Butler.
He said he was driving on County Road 12 and turned onto State Route 47. He said he then passed a tan pickup in front of him that was driving 40 mph.
The pickup then reportedly got about 3 feet from his bumper and then continued speeding up and slowing down behind him and activated a siren, Butler said.
Butler was unsure whether the vehicle was operated by an actual law enforcement officer, and he said continued driving onto State Route 533.
Butler stopped at a stop sign at State Route 540 and said the pickup then drove around him.
Deputies would later learn that the suspect had borrowed the vehicle from Landon Puckett, 618 W. Columbus Ave., Bellefontaine. Puckett told deputies the truck was equipped with a siren because he was a former Huntsville firefighter.
Puckett said Beverly had asked to borrow the truck with the purpose of hauling wood.
The defendant also was cited for reckless operation and for driving without a license.
