Normally, it is the football players that dominate the spotlight on the Ohio State campus. But it is a wrestler that is the most accomplished athlete at OSU.
Kyle Snyder, an OSU junior, became the youngest U.S. Olympic wrestling champion this summer with his gold medal at the Rio games.
The 20-year-old Maryland native is back in class at Ohio State as he prepares to defend the NCAA heavyweight title he won last winter.
Athletes in sports other than football and basketball typically don’t get noticed much around Columbus. However, that is not the case now for Snyder. According to several media reports, he often gets stopped by fellow students asking to pose for pictures with him.
At the Buckeyes’ season-opening football game against Bowling Green last Saturday, Snyder drew a standing ovation from the capacity crowd during a ceremony recognizing his gold medal performance. The fans made as much noise for Snyder as they did for the football Buckeyes, chanting “USA, USA” as Snyder stood at midfield.
One of the reasons I enjoy the Olympics is that it gives athletes from all sports an opportunity to get the publicity they deserve. I am glad those at OSU understand and appreciate the type of talent they have in Snyder.
