Operating levy renewal placed on March ballot
Middle school students at West Liberty-Salem are next in line for a brand new learning environment that should be complete in just a couple of weeks.
Tuesday, school board members learned in a regular meeting that Phase II of the district’s overhaul of its K-12 building will be completed by about Feb. 9, at which time middle school teachers will begin instruction in brand new classrooms.
A new high school science wing, and new classrooms for kindergarten students were built as part of Phase I of the construction project.
The school board voted Tuesday to place its 1 percent income tax for renewal on the March ballot. That levy was passed initially in 1992, and has been renewed every three years since.
The levy raises $1.3 million per year for the district’s general fund to pay for current operating expenses.
School officials have talked openly for months about renewing this levy in the coming spring. During an overview of his five-year forecast at an October board meeting, Treasurer Steve Godwin estimated an $888,516 shortfall in the school’s general fund by 2019, and a deficit in excess of $3.8 million by 2020 in the absence of that income tax revenue.
