The Benjamin Logan Middle School team Rockin’ Wookies earned one of the 11 spots for the 2016 First Lego League Ohio State Championship following their performance at the Sinclair Community College FLL District Tournament Jan. 16.
The state tournament is slated for Feb. 6 and 7 at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.
The Rockin’ Wookies includes seventh-graders Ben Coffield, Ashley Gantt, Sam Henderson, Kenna Hone, Max Leezer, Jacob McKenrick, Blake Peterson, Ethan Ricketts and Annika Simovart.

Two other BLMS teams also competed at the district tournament — the fifth-grade Lego My Buckeye: Elliott Bailey, Trey Miracle and Ian Scheiderer, who earned a Judge’s Award trophy; and the eighth-grade Smar-T’s: Anna Blake, Hunter Deickert, Joseph Gulick, Mason Hammer, Kamryn Mathys, Vance McClanahan, Ammon Miller and Mailiis Simovart.
They competed in a field of 31 teams who qualified from FLL Regional Tournaments in the Dayton region in November and December.
The district competition includes judging in core values, robot design and project, which related to this year’s theme “Trash Trek.”
During the closing ceremonies, Elliott Bailey, Ian Scheiderer, Ben Coffield, Kenna Hone, Kamryn Mathys and Mailiis Simovart were recognized for receiving Gracious Professional Awards at some point during the tournament.
