Subzero wind chills, snow and ice have become a part of the daily landscape lately in Logan County, requiring residents to take extra precautions when heading outside.
To protect pets from these harsh winter weather conditions, Logan County Dog Warden Benji Avila has provided a list of outdoor safety tips for dog owners to consider:

• Outdoor pets burn extra energy in the winter to stay warm. Consider consulting with a veterinarian about the nutritional needs of pets during the winter.
• Remember, if it is too cold for humans, it is probably too cold for your pet.
• Create a warm shelter for the outdoor pet to sleep and avoid the winter weather and wind. Experts suggest building a shelter that is off the ground and filled with thick, dry bedding. Wood chips make a great bedding and when changed frequently, provide a warm, dry environment.
• Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite will attack ears, tails and feet quickly. Hypothermia signs include whining, shivering, anxious, slowing down or stopped movement, weakness and looking for a place to burrow. Get pets inside quickly if those signs of hypothermia are exhibited.
• Check pets’ paws frequently for signs of cold weather-related injury or damage. Deicing salt from sidewalks and roads can cause injuries to their paws.
• Keep fresh, unfrozen water available at all times.
Contact Deputy Avila at the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, 592-5731, if any dogs needing assistance are seen.
