Mary Rutan Hospital offers a new eight-week course, “Creating a Healthy Me!” with sessions starting Feb. 17 and continuing throughout the year at the MRH Crossroads Business Center, 21 Hunter Place.
Class times are offered at 1 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays for the following session dates: Feb. 17 through April 6, May 4 through June 22, Aug. 3 through Sept. 21, and Sept. 28 through Nov. 16.
The evidence-based program is led by registered dietitians, an exercise physiologist and licensed social worker who will offer their guidance and support. Members of the MRH cardiac rehabilitation team also offer optional pre-program screenings for cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure.
Sessions include some of the following topics: “Waist and Wallet Wise” — strategies for healthy meal planning and effective ways to stock the pantry; “Let’s Get Moving” — benefits of strength and cardio exercise, incorporating physical activity into daily life; “Shopping Smart” — develop strategies for building meals around produce, recognize whole grain products, determine if trans fats are in bakery, snack items; along with “Food and Feelings;” “Dining Decisions Made Easy;” and “Think, Drink and Eat Your Way to Good Health.”
Weekly giveaways will be offered, and participants who attend all classes will have the chance to win a Fitbit.
Class size is limited, and a prepaid program fee of $25 to the Mary Rutan Foundation is required. The health screenings, programming and resources are valued at $750. To register, call 599-7005.
