PRATHER |
John L. Prather, 54, of 117 W. Brown Ave., was charged Tuesday with assault in a 2:50 p.m. incident and menacing, persistent disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing official business in a 3:50 p.m. incident.
He allegedly grabbed Tomasenia Connelly by the neck in the earlier incident in the 300 block of north Detroit Street.
An hour later, two officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department were dispatched to investigate a woman yelling in the street outside Mr. Prather’s residence. Officers arrived and tried to speak to Mayci Maddox, but the suspect ordered her inside.
He continued to yell at her and at officers. He jumped on a bicycle and rode off to the police department.
Both officers followed and the suspect exited the building to ride off, yelling “You ain’t going to catch me.” He rode north and began riding in circles in the intersection of Sandusky Avenue and Detroit.
A third officer coaxed him to the front lawn of the Bellefontaine Municipal Building, but a scuffle ensued when he tried to arrest the suspect.
The officers responded to assist in the suspect’s arrest.
While en route to the Logan County Jail, the suspect made repeated threats to harm officers and their families. He was placed in a restraint chair by jailers, officers report.
Warrant served
Hanna M. Ryan, 34, at large, was served Tuesday with a warrant for failure to appear.
Officers increase speed enforcement
Bellefontaine police officials hope motorists will heed warnings to slow down on south Main Street as officers have been directed to increase speed enforcement efforts in the 300 block.
Lt. Rick Herring said the enforcement focus came after multiple complaints from citizens. He said the area is most problematic in the city as people try to enter and exit Speedway, 329 S. Main St.
People have criticized the department for announcing the increased enforcement through the department’s website and through social media, but Lt. Herring points out the ultimate goal is slowing down traffic in the area.
The posted speed limit is 25 mph.
