John M. “Mike” Gordon, 80, of Bellefontaine, and formerly of West Mansfield, went to be with our Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at the Kobacker House, Columbus.
Born May 3, 1935, in West Mansfield, he was a son of the late John Robert and Eileen Rozina Kraus Gordon. He also was preceded in death by his previous wife, Virginia Pearl Roberts Gordon; and a son, Jerry Lee McKellop.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jean Foltz LaRoche Gordon, whom he married Oct. 14, 1990, in West Mansfield; former wife, Sheryl (Thompson) Gordon of Venice, Fla.; his children, Tamara K. (Larry L.) Baker and Kimberly L. Morris, both of West Mansfield, Terry J. (Jill) McKellop and Gretchen A. Gordon, both of Zanesfield, Sandra (Allan) Kerns of Delphos, Terri Hartley of Venice, Fla., John (Kathryn) LaRoche of Cincinnati, Jeffrey (Tina) LaRoche of Marysville, David (Deanne) LaRoche of Bellefontaine and Daniel (Tezrene) LaRoche of West Liberty; a daughter-in-law, Michele McKellop of West Mansfield; 22 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; sisters, M. Diane (Howard) Brubaker of Aurora, Judy Roach of Bellefontaine and Penny (Bob) McCarthy of Zanesfield; and many nieces and nephews.
A 1953 graduate of Euclid Senior High School, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1957. He retired from Honda of America Mfg. as a production coordinator.
To say that Mike was an avid sports fan would still be an understatement, as he would watch or listen to games as much as possible. His other passions in life were reading, traveling, aviation, the United States Navy and the USS Forrestal.
A longtime member of the West Mansfield Church of Christ where he was an elder, he also attended the West Mansfield United Methodist Church; was a member of the West Mansfield American Legion Post 603; the Lions Club International serving as governor of 13E during 2006 and 2007 and council chair during 2007 and 2008; an associate member of the Bellefontaine Lions Club; served on West Mansfield Village Council for 20 years and formerly served as a Boy Scout leader and Little League baseball coach.
Pastor Doug Thompson officiates a funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12, at the West Mansfield United Methodist Church. Burial follows at Greenlawn Cemetery, with military rites observed.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 11, at the Mannasmith-Schnurrenberger Funeral Home, 222 W. Center St., West Mansfield.
