James “Jim” W. Purcell, 64, of Columbus, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, at his home.
He was born March 8, 1952, in Bellefontaine, to the late John and Betty Wright Purcell.
Jim graduated from The Ohio State University, where he was recognized as the most outstanding debater in 1974, and from Central Michigan University. He coached the state runner-up debate team from Toledo Whitmer High School. He taught at and retired from Whitehall-Yearling High School.
At his death, he was dedicated to the St. Francis DeSales High School community where he was a former teacher and managed the Spirit Shop.
He was an active and devoted member of St. Anthony Parish in Columbus and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Kay Allen, and brother, Tom Purcell.
Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years, Mary Purcell; devoted children, Megan (Mark Caral) Purcell and Tim (Casey Aldrich) Purcell; sisters-in-law, Joyce Purcell, Carol McCorkle and Sue (Richard) Sweazy; brother-in-law, Steve (Jodi) Allen; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, at Schoedinger North Chapel, 5554 Karl Road, Columbus.
A Mass of Christian Burial is at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at St. Anthony Parish, 1300 Urban Drive, Columbus. A graveside service is at 3:30 p.m. in Calvary Cemetery in Bellefontaine.
In lieu of flowers, donations are strongly encouraged to be made to the St. Francis DeSales Scholarship Fund, 4212 Karl Road, Columbus, OH 43224, for the memorial scholarship that will be established in his name.
