Indian Lake junior Hayden Pummel placed at the Maumee Bay Classic for the third time in his career, and in the process achieved his 100th career win Saturday.
Pummel finished eighth at 182 pounds at a tournament that is considered the state’s second-toughest tournament outside of Ironman.
“Hayden had a nice tournament and got to 100 wins,” said IL head coach Ryan Dickson. “This is a super tough tournament and it’s great he reached 100 wins, but his goals are still at the end of the season. We just have to keep our nose to the grindstone and keep moving forward.”
Nationally-ranked Brighton High School of Michigan battled past Louisville 229.5-224.5 to win the 47-team tournament. Nationally-ranked Elyria was third with 209.5 points, Perrysburg was fourth with 163 points and Edison was fifth with 147.5 points. Indian Lake finished 41st with 28.5 points.
Pummel, who has placed seventh and eighth at the tournament before, posted a 4-2 record over the weekend. He lost a second-round championship match by one point, but came back to win three in a row in the consolation rounds to ensure placement. Pummel then had to injury default out of the tournament and that placed him eighth.
The Lakers’ Nate Cummins (132) went 2-2 and missed placing by one win. He reached the championship quarterfinals and then dropped two matches in a row to drop out of the tournament. Lane Mefford (182) also went 2-2 and missed placing by two wins.
Also competing for the Lakers were Noah Steed (138), Gage Lowery (160) and Joe Scarberry (195).
Indian Lake competes again Friday and Saturday at the Sally George Invitational in Marion.
