Tricky task Indian Lake Middle School Youth Leadership students attempt to button shirts while wearing blindfolds and gloves and with cotton in their ears during the final session of the leadership program, which featured various activities focusing on diversity led by Kelly Tracey from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The demonstration showed students what it’s like to complete seemingly simple tasks while essentially being blind and deaf and with a lack of normal feeling in their hands. “This activity really demonstrates what it takes to live with a disability,” Ms. Tracey said. ILMS Youth Leadership is made up of 10 seventh graders and 10 eighth-graders graders and is hosted by the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center. This is the 17th year this program has been offered to middle school students in Logan County. (PHOTO | INDIAN LAKE SCHOOLS) |

SADD members had the younger students jog in place for 30 seconds, then plug their nose and breathe through a straw signifying the impact of smoking cigarettes on lungs over time. Beyond tobacco, the ILHS SADD presentations also warned about Internet and cell phone safety, avoiding prescription drugs, stranger danger, bicycle safety and even limiting video game play. They also stressed the importance of exercise and other healthy lifestyle choices. Fourth-graders will be making posters based on these demonstrations. (PHOTO | INDIAN LAKE SCHOOLS) |
