Indian Lake High School is making final preparations for the Class of 2020 Commencement on the originally scheduled date of 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17.
The event will take place in the ILHS student parking lot, rain or shine, officials said.
Indian Lake Superintendent Rob Underwood addressed the members of the senior class and the circumstances surrounding the school shutdown during the pandemic in a recent video.
“I want you to know that everyone here at school and in the community, we’re deeply saddened by the end of your senior year. We know that it certainly wasn’t what you had in mind and that you’ve missed many important events.”
However, Underwood said the staff, administration team and board members felt it was important to make the Indian Lake graduation a safe event, but as special as possible for the seniors and their families.
“Please don’t confuse my words. We’re going to host the graduation in the student parking lot, but it’s not going to be a drive through graduation. We’re going to try to hold a tradition ceremony, in every sense of the word, just with social distancing in mind.”
Featured speaker Class President Nate Reichert will provide his address, and ILHS Principal Kyle Wagner also will address the graduates.
The Class of 2020 Top Ten students, along with the salutatorian and valedictorian will be announced at that time as well.
Members of the Class of 2020 will receive detailed instructions ahead of the event. Seniors are permitted to have one vehicle for the ceremony. Two vehicles may be permitted under special circumstances if cleared with school officials prior to the event.
People who are at high risk for contacting coronavirus should not attend, including those over the age of 65, those with underlying health issues or weakened immune systems and people who are pregnant. Masks are encouraged.
All vehicles will enter campus through the drive on County Road 91 Local law enforcement, school administrators and board members will assist in getting vehicles to their assigned parking spot. Graduates are advised to sit in the vehicle’s passenger seat.
The ceremony will be broadcast over the radio so that attendees will be able to hear. It will also be carried live on the Indian Lake Facebook page via Facebook Live.
Everyone is to remain in their vehicle at all times until the graduates are called up to the stage in small groups. Up to two parents may accompany their graduate to the stage for the purpose of taking pictures.
Once all the graduates have received their diplomas, the class president will instruct them to move their tassel and complete the ceremony. Ushers will dismiss vehicles immediately.
