Elmer Lewis Young, 85, of West Liberty, passed away at 7:40 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, at Vancrest of Urbana. He was born in Marysville on Oct. 20, 1930, to the late Lewis Wesley and Minnie Victoria Boystel Young. On June 2, 1951, he married the former Mary Winkhart and she survives.
He is also survived by his seven children, David Young, Deborah (David) Wallace, Mary (Rodney) Vest and Mark (Janet) Young, all of West Liberty, Terry (Ron) Vanest of Prospect, Kim Young of Bellefontaine and Brenda (Eric) Knepper of Urbana; special sisters-in-law, Arlene Voke and Marianne Young; 33 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Charlie, Ray, Richard, Robert, Phillip and Norman; and his sisters, Marjorie, Nancy, Sue, and Betsy.
He was a 1948 graduate of Concord Local and then attended The Ohio State University, majoring in vo-ag Education. As a young man, Elmer began an exceptional career raising, breeding and showing Ayrshire cattle. During this time, he received several accolades including, High Herd Butterfat, High Cow Milk Production and High Herd Milk Productions. After this, he farmed locally for 35 years, operating Bonded Oil in Urbana, working for Craig’s Elevator from 1979 to 1995, and retiring from Kroger in Urbana after 10 years.
He was a member of the West Liberty Church of God. Elmer enjoyed The Ohio State Buckeyes, The Cleveland Browns, working in his garden and growing his gladioli and mums. He also loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in sporting activities and extracurricular activities. His most cherished time was spent with his family at various gatherings and meals. During this time, he instilled in his family that they can never say “I love you” enough.
Pastor Ron Irick officiates a funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016, at the West Liberty First Church of God, 315 Liberty St., West Liberty, where visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9.
Burial is in Highland Memorial Cemetery in West Liberty.
