Von Devere Jenkins, 96, of Lady Lake, Fla., formerly of Elida, passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, at Lexington Park Assisted Living Facility under the care of Cornerstone Hospice in Lady Lake, Fla.
He was born Jan. 6, 1920, in Belle Center, the fifth of nine children to Carl C. and Eva Starrett Jenkins. Both preceded him in death. He grew up in Logan County and moved to Springfield when he left the home. There he met Mary E. Tabor to whom he was united in marriage June 11, 1938. She preceded him in death July 13, 2002. He was also preceded in death by one young daughter, Nancy Faye, and two granddaughters, Gretchen Elizabeth Jenkins and Liza Anne Sackinger.
He is survived by three sons, Jerry E. (Frances) Jenkins of Lady Lake, Fla., Dr. Michael A. (Theresa) Jenkins of Sylvania and Brian V. (Juliana) Jenkins of Lima; a daughter, Susan D. (James) Peed of Bumpass, Va.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother, Ronald Jenkins of West Mansfield; and sisters, Carol Potter of Bellefontaine, Phyllis Rees of Sarasota, Fla., and Virginia Smith of New Braunfels, Texas.
Mr. Jenkins enjoyed a long career in the U.S. Army and the Ohio National Guard, retiring from the guard at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1976. During his service years he was a training instructor in WWII. He trained soldiers for National Guard call-ups for the Korean and the Viet Nam wars. He stood duty on campus during the Kent State University riots.
In addition, Mr. Jenkins served American Township in Allen County for many years as a township constable.
Funeral services begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, with viewing one hour prior to the service at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, 209 W. 3rd St., Delphos, where calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8. The Rev. Tom Brown officiates.
Burial follows in Greenlawn Cemetery in Elida.
