Botkins used a key second quarter to put Riverside in catchup mode Tuesday as the Trojans held on for a 57-47 non-league boys basketball victory.
The loss drops the Pirates to 6-11 on the season.
“We got off to a slow start in the first half and had a lot of trouble taking care of the basketball,” said RHS head coach Dean Sanford. “Our turnovers got us into an early hole, but we made some adjustments at halftime and had a really good third quarter that got the lead back down to one.
“The kids never quit, though, and that’s what’s important. We just had a really bad second quarter that hurt us in the end.”
Riverside led 11-9 after the opening quarter, but saw Botkins go on a 17-6 run in the second quarter. That gave the Trojans a 26-17 advantage entering the break.
The Pirates managed to outscore the Trojans 14-11 in the third quarter, but still trailed 37-31. Botkins sealed the win with a 20-16 effort in the fourth quarter.
Jesse Kean led the Pirates with 17 points, Landon Kelsey had 10 points and Ross Stevens added eight points.
In junior varsity action, Riverside dropped Botkins 47-38. Kyle Knight led the Pirates with 18 points and Hank Harshbarger had nine points.
Riverside travels to Upper Scioto Valley on Friday for a Northwest Central Conference matchup.
