A driver was charged with drunk driving after smashing his pickup truck into a utility pole in Russells Point early Sunday morning.

Rodney Burnside II, 44, of Bellefontaine, was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, failure to control and leaving the scene of a crash around 8:30 a.m. Sunday shortly after seeking treatment for his injuries at Mary Rutan Hospital.
Officers report the crash occurred about 2 a.m. Sunday in the 700 block of South Orchard Island Road. When police arrived at the scene, they report the airbags were deployed, but no one was around.
Burnside reportedly told police he had no recollection of the crash.
Witnesses told police Burnside was seen at the Village Pantry gas station, 209 State Route 708, Russells Point, shortly before the crash. Police also noted the injuries for which the suspect was seeking treatment were consistent with a car crash.
Police identified the vehicle’s registered owner as Burnside, but did not make contact with him until he sought treatment at the hospital for what were minor injuries.
