Douglas Mark Roby, 63, husband of Susan Sturgill, passed away Monday Feb. 5, 2018, at his residence in Sidney, surrounded by family.
Doug was born Jan. 17, 1955, in Bellefontaine, a son of the late Willis A. Roby and Marcella Ringler Roby. Doug was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He grew up in Rushsylvania, graduating from Benjamin Logan High School in 1973. That year he welcomed a daughter, Angel, with then wife, Debra Engle.
From August 1973 to August 1976, he served in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he was an airplane mechanic stationed in Barbers Point, Hawaii, and Lemoore, Calif., and was a Vietnam War veteran. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he enjoyed traveling around the country, camping and seeing the beauty of America.
In 1980, he returned home to Ohio to be closer to friends and family in the state that he loved. In 1981, he welcomed a daughter, Jennifer, with then wife Lois Abramovitz. In 1986, he married Dawn Miller and together they raised Dawn’s daughters, Michelle Caudill and Laura Coleman. Doug became very close to Laura and that relationship continued until his death. Doug and Dawn were married until the time of her death in 1988.
In 1992, Doug moved to Belle Center. In 1997, his stepson, Joseph D. DeFeudis (Debra’s son), came to live with him. Doug and JoJo developed a great loving relationship.
In 2008, Doug married Susan “Sue” Sturgill. Together they raised Sue’s children, Tyler and Kylie. Doug developed an extremely close, strong and meaningful fatherly relationship with both of them. Doug and Sue were married until the time of his death.
Doug was a hard worker. He worked for XPO Logistics Inc. in Sidney for 23 years. He was an intelligent man with great sense of humor and a big heart. Throughout his life he was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman and gardener. He had a knack for growing vegetables. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion Post 217 in Sidney and VFW Post 4239 in Sidney.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Sturgill; children, Angel (Jonathan) Early of Rushsylvania, Jennifer (Travis) Roby of Hanover, Md., Laura Coleman of Columbus, and Tyler Rose and Kylie Davis, both of Sidney; grandchildren, Kiera, Misty, Timothy, Joseph Jr., Jonathan, Angelina and Dorian; and great-grandchildren, Lelah, Orlando, Brayden and Adoniss.
He is also survived by brothers, Willis Roby Jr., Michael (Charlotte) Roby and Blaine (Patti) Roby, all of Rushsylvania; sisters-in-law, Kim (Brian) Hendershot of Sidney, Billie (Donny) Branam of Piqua, Melissa Sturgill of Waynesfield Amy (Tony) Renner,of Louisville, Ky., and Michelle Lundy of Piqua; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Willis A. Roby, mother, Marcella Roby, sister-in-law, Patty Roby, and wives, Dawn Roby and Debra Roby.
He was buried Feb. 10 at Graceland Cemetery with full military honors.
