Nicholas A. Nevels, 33, at large, was charged Saturday with drug offenses and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs after a single-vehicle crash in the 300 block of Spring Avenue
He was charged with trafficking in crack cocaine; possession of crack cocaine and possession of marijuana. He also was charged with OVI and cited for driving under suspension, failure to control and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Around 5:35 a.m. he was driving a sport utility vehicle eastbound and drove off the left side of the street. The SUV hit a tree, knocking its front bumper off.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department arrived and began talking with him, detecting an odor of alcohol coming from him. A plastic bag with white powder and rock cocaine was observed on the driver’s side floor board. While talking with officers, the motorist tried to conceal the drugs so an officer moved to stop him.
They struggled and the suspect threw the bag over the SUV and onto a grassy boulevard.
The drugs, weighing nearly 30 grams, were recovered along with $790, a plastic bag with marijuana and an open bottle of beer.
He refused to submit to sobriety tests and was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
