“We recently found holes in the truss structure and the floor beams that you could fit your hand through,” Mr. Coleman said. “In the bridge industry, it’s what we call fracture critical. If you lose one floor beam, you lose the whole bridge.”
Funding for a two-lane replacement has been approved, but the new structure will not be built until 2020.
The new 140-feet-long and 36-feet-wide structure funded by up to $3.988 million in federal highway funds and an estimated $997,000 in local funds, will be able to accommodate speeds of at least 55 miles per hour. This will require the proposed relocation and property acquisition to install the new bridge just north of the existing bridge.
