Bellefontaine native Sarah Patrick Wickenheiser, a naval architect with the United States Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, Md., was recently named the Coast Guard Engineer of the Year.
A 2004 graduate of Bellefontaine High School with a bachelor’s degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from Webb Institute in Glen Cove, N.Y., Ms. Wickenheiser’s work is credited with saving a vessel from a potential hull failure.
“During the modification to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration vessel Thomas Jefferson, she identified design deficiencies in the ship’s structure that could have resulted in catastrophic hull failure,” according to a release.
