A group of enthusiastic Bellefontaine Elementary School pupils arrived Monday evening to the board of education meeting bearing armloads of treats as a special surprise in honor of School Board Recognition Month.
Students who attended the meeting were members of several Leader In Me clubs, including the Basket Fillers, Sunshine Club and the Furry Friends. Their principal Pat Martz and several of their teachers also accompanied the pupils, who distributed crayon-lined baskets of candy, along with thank you cards and banners to each of the board members.
Pupils from other grade levels also had created special gifts for the board members, including a 2016 calendar featuring artwork by Bellefontaine Middle School students.
Also during the meeting, members were provided with an update regarding repairs to the high school gym floor by Roger Ely, executive director of administrative services and transportation.
The gym floor was damaged in 19 different spots during a Jan. 16 Mad River CrossFit event, as previously reported in the Examiner. Last week, a crew from Cincinnati Flooring completed temporary repairs to the floor so that high school boys and girls basketball games could still be played over the weekend.
“We’re very thankful to Cincinnati Flooring for coming in and in just 3 1/2 days, made these repairs so that our games could continue as scheduled,” Mr. Ely said.
“Thank you for taking care of that and getting it done so quickly,” President Joan Haushalter said to Mr. Ely. “It took a lot of time and effort on your part, and we were fortunate to be able to use the gym once again this weekend.”
The cost of the temporary repairs was approximately $5,000, and Mr. Ely has been in contact with Mad River CrossFit’s insurance company regarding both this short-term fix and the long-term repair or replacement for the floor. He said the insurance company has issued him a claim number and an adjuster has been assigned to the project.
Superintendent Brad Hall said the next step will include having several companies, including Cincinnati Flooring, provide multiple options for either more extensive repairs or floor replacement. The district then can “weigh the pros and cons of each one,” he said.
