The public is invited to attend the Bellefontaine High School War Memorial dedication at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15, on the east side of the building.
The ceremony will take place outdoors, near the Distance Learning Center.
The BHS War Memorial began as an idea and project of the 2019-2020 BHS AGAPE Club, and has now become a reality.
The memorial honors all BHS students and Logan County residents “who have fought to defend and serve our great country in times of war,” organizers said.
The names of the individuals who gave their lives defending freedom, from the Civil War through 2020, are inscribed on a memorial plaque to be unveiled at the dedication.
After brief opening remarks, Pastor Karen Kane will offer an invocation. Bellefontaine City Schools Superintendent Brad Hall will speak about the history of the memorial and what an honor it is for BHS to recognize these heroes.
Michael Hassel will speak about the formation of the Dale McGinnis Post 686 of the American Legion. The post was named after Ridgeway resident Dale McGinnis, the first African American from Logan County killed in World War II, who is honored with a special plaque on the memorial as well.
Retired Logan County Family Court Judge Dan. W. Bratka will speak from his perspective as a veteran.
A Color Guard and flag presentation will conclude the short ceremony.
Area businesses helped make the project possible through in-kind donations of supplies and services. Among the donors include Marker Construction providing labor and equipment to pour the concrete and install the plaques, and Ohio Ready Mix and Duff Quarry’s donation of concrete and aggregate materials for the project.
