Bellefontaine Middle School sixth-grader Mason McMillen takes a turn watering one of two scarlet oaks planted by the Bellefontaine Shade Tree Commission Tuesday behind the school, continuing an annual tree-planting tradition offered by the group in recent years. “We’ve been in this building now for eight years, and the tree commission’s donations have helped to turn an otherwise drab landscape into a beautiful area behind our school,” BMS Associate Principal Gavin Yoder said. “They have also helped with tree plantings in front of our building, and we are planning to line our entryway with trees as well.” Yoder said sixth-graders are selected to be a part of the planting each year since they will have the chance to watch the trees grow during their upcoming years at the school. Shade Tree Commission member and Logan County Commissioner Joe Antram provided an overview for the pupils of all of the essential elements trees need to grow, and the numerous helpful benefits of trees in the environment. Saturday, the Shade Tree Commission also is hosting free tree sapling giveaways from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Logan County Farmers’ Market. (EXAMINER PHOTO | MANDY LOEHR)
