J. Richard “JR” Spain, 86, of North Lewisburg, died peacefully Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Green Hills Center in West Liberty surrounded by his loving family.
He was retired after 40 years as a machinist with the Louden Brothers Tool and Die Company and was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves during the Korean War. A longtime member of the North Lewisburg United Methodist Church where he enjoyed caring for their landscaping, he also was a longtime member of the Woodstock Lions Club. Active in masonic bodies, he was a 60-year member of the Mechanicsburg Masonic Lodge 113 F&AM where he had served as Past Master and, for many years, Tyler. He was also a member and Past High Priest of Star Chapter 126 and a member of Caroline Chapter OES.
Richard was a proud supporter of his community throughout the years. A favorite pastime was his passion for the sport of harness racing.
A dedicated, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he loved to watch his children and grandchildren participate in their sports throughout the years. He also had a love of hunting, trapshooting and fishing at Pine Lake and loved taking his kids hunting for mushrooms at Aunt Margaret’s.
Richard was born Aug. 25, 1931, in North Lewisburg to the late Ralph and Louise Furrow Spain. He married the former Martha Frances Ingram on Oct. 10, 1952, at the Milford Center United Methodist Church. His wife of 65 years survives, along with their children, David (Nancy) Spain of North Lewisburg, Anna (Neal) Blankenship of West Liberty and Julia (Bill) Black of Springfield; grandchildren, Brian (Sonja) Spain, Desnee (Brad) Wolters, Faith Hilterbrand, Kristy (Aaron) Spring, Jennifer Cubbage and Chase Black; great-grandchildren, Mia, Camden, Wesley, Zakary and Chloe; a sister, Virginia Brenner of North Lewisburg; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 24, in the Ingram Funeral Home, Marysville, and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Monday, June 25, funeral service in the North Lewisburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Montgomery officiating.
Burial follows at Maple Grove Cemetery.
