Members of a committee looking into city ordinances governing mobile food service operations and marquee signs said they were generally receptive to the ideas, although they won’t have the final say on the issues.

The Bellefontaine City Council’s Rules Committee met this morning to discuss those issues with city administrators.
Law Director Josh Stolly presented a draft ordinance regarding food trucks and other mobile food services. The proposed legislation would require owners of mobile operations to have an application on file with the city, pay an annual fee and adhere to certain location requirements.
The ordinance allows fees and locations to be changed by the city administration without going back to the council and the annual fee is currently $50, Service-Safety Director Jim Holycross said.
The issue of location, however, proved to be a snag in the process as City Engineer Tim Notestine said he would prefer to see the allowed locations of the food service operations to be tied to existing zoning. He said there are no real issues allowing food trucks in B-2 zones (such as downtown) or B-3 (the commercial area on the south side of the city) but B-1 (which includes most of Main Street from Auburn Avenue south) is problematic because drive-up food operations are only allowed via conditional use permits.
“If a stick and stone building that wants to do the same thing can’t be there why can one of these?” Mr. Notestine asked the group.
