A group of Benjamin Logan students, teachers and community members are dedicating a number of their summer days planting and tending to the Growing Gardens, Growing Minds plot located on district grounds.
The volunteers recently planted tomatoes and salad mix, and at their next gathering, they will plant peppers and additional salad greens
They use soil amendments such as lime, epsom salts and worm castings to promote healthy plant growth.
In addition, the youth and adult gardeners continue to work on the woven poly weed barrier and the drip irrigation system that will eventually supply the entire garden.
Representatives said the market garden is a work in progress and the volunteers will continue to nurture the garden “in hopes of supplying a bountiful amount of food for the community.”
Volunteers at the most recent planting included: students Olivia Hahn, Charlotte Graham, Finch Hone and Wyatt LeVan; district teachers Nancy Forsythe, Bruce Smith and Ryan Kerns, along with community volunteer Bob Stoll.
