A woman who reportedly did nothing while her husband forced a young girl to use drugs was sentenced to local jail time Monday in Logan County Common Pleas Court.
Michelle Hughes, 37, of Bellefontaine, was sentenced by Judge Mark S. O’Connor to 60 days in jail for a misdemeanor endangering children conviction.
She and her husband, Andrew Hughes, 31, were originally charged with fourth-degree felony counts of corrupting another with drugs for the July 14, 2015, incident and the husband still awaits trial on those charges.
The girl’s mother spoke in court Monday and chastised Ms. Hughes for her behavior.
“She is a mother herself and should have done something to protect her, but she did nothing,” the girl’s mother said.
Ms. Hughes must also complete two years’ probation and could face an additional four months in jail if she fails to live up to the terms.
• Shawn VanHoose, 43, of Bellefontaine, was sentenced to a year in prison for an aggravated assault charge after his victim, Melissa Smith, told Judge Mark S. O’Connor that she is lucky to be alive and still suffers from headaches and has visible scars.
The defendant attacked her with a beer bottle on Aug. 9, 2015, after he was asked to leave a late night drinking party at a vacant business building at 1520 S. Main St..
Mr. VanHoose apologized for harming the victim and said he would have attempted to do so earlier but the court issued a no-contact-with-the-victim order.
• Timothy Roberson, 28, of Dayton, entered a guilty plea to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge and immediately was sentenced to spend five months in the Logan County Jail with credit for about three months already served.
He had reportedly been drinking heavily on Jan. 8 and became upset that the dog was eating table scraps, prosecutors said. That led to him threatening and striking his girlfriend at the time, Amanda Martin, and committing other acts of violence that were witnessed by a neighbor of the Russells Point property where he was residing at the time.
• Natalie Slife, 27, of Sidney, had nine months added to an 18-month prison sentence she is already serving for a nine-county check forgery scheme.
Judge O’Connor considered at some length whether to make Logan County’s two forgery charges consecutive or concurrent to the sentence imposed by Shelby County and ultimately stated he believed the seriousness of the crime warranted a longer sentence.
She and several other defendants reportedly forged between $20,000 and $30,000 in checks and passed them at locations throughout a nine-County region.
• Haley Mickey, 26, of Columbus, was placed on three years’ community control and ordered to pay $3,396 restitution to victim Amber Parker in connection with a fourth-degree felony fleeing and eluding conviction.
She was arrested after a Sept. 17, 2015, incident in which officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department attempted to stop her after she was involved in a fight in the city in which she reportedly attacked another woman with a pipe.
Officers first tried to stop her vehicle in the 100 block of east Sandusky Avenue, but she continued out of the city at a reasonable speed and proceeded eastbound on U.S. Route 33. Troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol deployed spikes near State Route 347 to stop the eastbound vehicle.
• Kevin Carter Jr., 35, of Russells Point, was sentenced to complete the six-month rehabilitation program at the West Central Community Correctional Facility for two counts of possession of drugs.
Officers of the Russells Point Police Department and Indian Lake EMS paramedics responded to his residence on April 2 on a report of drug overdose. During the response, authorities found cocaine and methamphetamines in the home.
• Bacilio Ramirez III, 35, of Lakeview, was ordered to spend 30 days in the Logan County Jail with credit for six days served for a fourth-degree felony drug trafficking charge. He also must complete three years of community control with intensive drug counseling.
• Heather Stotler, 33, of Lima, was placed on the three-year intervention in lieu of conviction program for two counts of forgery stemming from an incident in mid-March when she stole two checks from her former boyfriend, Dana Hartsock. She cashed one for $150 and was ordered to repay that amount, while employees of the Osgood State Bank questioned the second one and called Mr. Hartsock before cashing it, prosecutors said.
• Keith Lewis, 22, of Orchard Island, Indian Lake, was placed on the intervention program for trafficking in heroin. He was arrested by the drug task force in April while dealing from the 547 E. Columbus Ave. apartment of his mother, Tina Butler, prosecutors said in court.
• Christina Myers, 25, of , was placed in intervention for illegally possessing the prescription pain medication fentanyl during a traffic stop by the Ohio State Highway Patrol on July 16, 2015.
• Amber Matthews, 30, of Bellefontaine, entered guilty pleas to two counts of trafficking in heroin for controlled drug buys coordinated by the Logan County Joint Drug Task Force in January at 413 E. Sandusky Ave. She will be sentenced Nov. 28.
