West Liberty-Salem’s boys golf team defeated visiting Northeastern, the defending Ohio Heritage Conference champion, 153-177 to open league play Wednesday at Liberty Hills Golf Club.
“Even though this was our first league match, it was a very important one against the defending champs,” said WL-Salem head coach Darrin Leichty. “Northeastern beat us by 13 strokes the day before at Darby Creek, so that really got our attention.”
Max Eggleston led the Tigers as match medalist with a 37, while Dillon Callicoat carded a 38 and Kannon Stillings and Michael Frederick each had 39s. Tyler Gardner added a 45 and Logan Brown had a 50.
“Michael birdied the first hole and that led to a career-best round,” said Leichty. “We have to score better on par threes going forward, nine over par isn’t acceptable.”
