Graduating West Liberty-Salem seniors were encouraged Sunday by a call to strive for the best version of themselves, and to recognize that commencement exercises are not a conclusion, but instead a beginning of what’s to come.

And during this time of transition and uncertainty, the words of a timeless children’s author gave the 2016 graduates a moment to reflect on their high school careers.
“Dr. Seuss said, ‘sometimes you will never know the value of something, until it becomes a memory,’” valedictorian Leah Cole said in her address to fellow graduates, reciting a list of student memories.
Friday night football games, conference championships and academic awards are “splashes of color,” in what can be an otherwise mundane high school year, she said.
Now, the time has come for the 2016 graduates to be the, “splashes of color,” for a dark world, Leah told her peers.
Graduating seniors are, “masterpieces in the making,” she said.
“Masterpieces don’t come by accident,” Leah went on. “We have to be purposeful with our actions.”
