William Howard “Bill” Shumaker, 87, died Sept. 5, 2018, in his home in West Liberty, surrounded by family.
He was born Aug. 3, 1931, on a farm near West Liberty, the only son and third of four children born to William Howard and Anna S. King Shumaker.
Bill is lovingly remembered by his family and many friends; his wife of 63 years, Eleanor Stoltzfus Shumaker; three daughters, Sharon (Mark Chupp) Shumaker, Patricia (Geoff) Chisholm and Teresa (Ed) Swartley; six grandchildren, Kaila (Brian) Martin, Loren Shumaker Chupp, Emily Shumaker Chupp, John A Swartley, Leah Swartley and Anna Chisholm; a sister, Jeanette (Kenneth) Hostetler; and a brother-in-law, Donald Hostetler.
His mother preceded him in death in 1976 and his father preceded him in death in 1993. He also was preceded in death by a nephew, Neil Hostetler in 1998, and sisters, Annabelle Hostetler in 2014 and Wanda Shumaker in 2018.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Bethel Mennonite Church in West Liberty, where a memorial service follows at 1:30 p.m. Bill chose to donate his body to medical research.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bill’s name to Mennonite Central Committee, Akron, PA; or Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, IN.
