Dandelions are among the most under-appreciated pieces of local flora but — like the veterans who have served their country — they should not be taken for granted, a retired U.S. Air Force officer said during the city’s Memorial Day observance on Monday.

Despite the fact that dandelions can be a nuisance to those who like to keep a well-maintained yard, the sunny yellow flowers are a splash of color in the springtime and the plants can be eaten in salads or made into wine, Lt. Col. Joseph V. Graham said in his comments at the Bellefontaine Cemetery.
“Have you ever known a child who has picked dandelions and given them to their mother as an act of love?” he asked the crowd. “And in presenting them, we show honor and respect.
“Dandelions cause us to reflect. They cause me to appreciate what I have and not take things for granted. They cause me to remember.
