Surrounded by a host of family and friends, U.S. Army veteran Clarence “Jake” Jacobs was recognized Monday during AMVETS Doyle Miller Post 39 Memorial Day festivities in Lakeview.

Mr. Jacobs and his wife, Annie, recently returned to their Lakeview home from their winter residence in Florida, where he suffered a stroke and lost mobility in November. He also has battled multiple sclerosis for more than 30 years.
Serving from 1956 to 1958, Mr. Jacobs attained the rank of private first class stationed at Ft. Bragg in the transportation and electrical unit. After his service, he was among the original organizers of Post 39, where he served as a trustee and canteen manager for a number of years, and represented the post at many state and national AMVETS conventions.
His return home this week was just in time for the annual observance he cofounded in 1984 with former village police chief, the late Jay Busic.
