No evidence it occurred here
Local authorities have not yet received any reliable information as to why a man showed up Thursday morning at Mary Rutan Hospital with a gunshot wound in the upper right part of his chest.
Hoan “Wayne” Phan, 33, who in the past resided just outside Bellefontaine, was brought to the hospital around 9:30 a.m.
He was conscious and told police detectives his wound was not painful.
“He told detectives he didn’t realize he had been shot at first,” Bellefontaine Police Lt. Rick Herring said.
They still are not sure at what location he was shot, but they are confident it did not happen in Bellefontaine.
Logan County Sheriff Andrew Smith said his deputies accompanied officers to 2166 Township Road 179 where the victim showed up in the early morning hours Thursday.
Nothing indicated the shooting occurred there, the sheriff reported.
Mr. Phan told detectives he was shot in Dayton and they have passed the information on to detectives there.
“We really aren’t sure,” Lt. Herring said, “because what he was telling us didn’t make sense.”
His arrival at the MRH emergency department prompted a lock down of the hospital.
Laura Miller, vice president of marketing and communications at the hospital, said, “Our process for lock down is at the discretion of each unit director based on the situation.
“Because the location/details of the shooter was not known at the time the victim came in, we went on lock down to ensure the safety of our patients, staff and visitors.”
Hospital staff contacted police and nearly every available officer from that shift responded to the scene.
The victim was stabilized and transported by a Bellefontaine squad to the helipad for a flight to Grant Medical Center in Columbus.
