Driver Kaityln Klass, 25, of 628 Cooper Ave., Bellefontaine, was charged with a felony count of possession of heroin during a traffic stop about 1:10 a.m. Monday in Lakeview.
Her passenger, Amber N. Barker, 30, 106 N. Koke St., DeGraff, was also arrested on a probation violation and was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office on patrol in the area observed her vehicle fail to come to a complete stop at the intersection of north Oak Street and Stephenson Street and then accelerate at a high rate of speed. The stop was initiated in a driveway at 330 N. Oak St.
While speaking with the two individuals, deputies observed a digital scale in plain sight in the center console of the vehicle.
The scale was seized, and it had a white powder residue, along with a sticky dark substance on the interior.
Klass consented to a search of the vehicle, and deputies recovered a small baggie containing a powder residue and a box with a key lock behind the driver’s seat. Once the box was unlocked, deputies said it contained a large amount of used syringes, several spoons with burn marks, several small baggies, along with approximately 1 gram of suspected black tar heroin.
Both women denied ownership or knowledge of the items found in the vehicle. They were placed under arrest and transported to the jail.
Deputies also seized Klass’ cell phone as evidence and will be seeking a search warrant for the phone. A report has been forwarded to the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office regarding additional charges for Klass, including trafficking in drugs, tampering with evidence, possession of drug abuse instruments, possession of drug paraphernalia and a traffic citation for failure to yield at a stop sign.
