Owen Wyne, 15, of 122 Warren Ave., Russells Point, was charged with felony counts of theft of a firearm and tampering with evidence Tuesday related to a theft reported Sunday.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Sunburst Street in Lakeview regarding a stolen firearm. A resident reported that his Sig Sauer M17 9mm was missing from a gun cabinet.
The resident told deputies he had noticed that items had been moved around in his gun cabinet, and that day, he received a message from his mother and brother that a teen who had been at his house was bragging about stealing a gun that matched the description of the Sig Sauer.
Owen was identified as the suspect, and deputies were able to speak to him later that day at his residence. He initially denied taking the firearm.
However, upon further investigation, deputies spoke with Owen again Tuesday, and the teen said he “thought it would be cool to have a gun” so he “took one” while at the residence Aug. 8.
Aug. 14, Owen told deputies he gave the gun to a named 20-year-old suspect, and then tried to get the gun back multiple times several days later. However, he said the 20-year-old told him via text message that he disposed of the firearm in a waterway by Indian Lake.
Deputies were in contact with the Russells Point Police Department this week regarding having a dive team look for the stolen firearm.
Owen was placed under arrest and was lodged in the Logan County Juvenile Detention Center. Deputies continue to investigate the second suspect’s involvement in the case.
