Sylvester John “Bud” Deao, 87, formerly of Edgefield, S.C., and Terre Haute, passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018, in Logan Acres Senior Community, Bellefontaine.
He was born Oct. 29, 1930, in Hontzdale, Pa., a son of John and Mary Hichak Deao.
Sylvester proudly served his country as a corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired from International Harvester and also worked as a carpenter. Sylvester was a Knights of Columbus Council Member of 1727 Urbana Lodge, Monsignor Buckley Assembly, 4th Degree, and was very active in the Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and gardening For many years he delighted children as he portrayed Santa for churches and organizations. His humor, kindness and wisdom were infectious. Sylvester was always willing to help and the first one to volunteer for charitable events. Most of all, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma Jean Stanton Deao; his daughters, Annette (Gary) Haber and Susan (Randy) Randles; his sons, David (Karen) Deao, John (Shari) Deao and Paul (Darlene) Deao; grandchildren, Andrew (Nashelle) Keenan, Ryan Knox, Dustin Deao, Rebecca Deao, Ashley Stuckey and Amy Deao; two great-grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Delbert.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Victoria Deao; and several siblings.
Calling is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in the Vernon Funeral Home, Urbana. A Mass of Christian Burial is at 2 p.m. Friday, April 27, in St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bellefontaine. Burial follows in Terre Haute Cemetery.
