James Lowell Kauffman, 83, of Urbana, passed away at 7:40 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2018, at his residence.
He was born in West Liberty on Aug. 20, 1934, a son of the late Fred L. and Viola F. Kauffman Kauffman. He is also preceded by an infant son, Kent Kauffman.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ann Allison Kauffman of Urbana; one daughter, Liesl (Jeff) Cornelius of Cable; two sons; Craig (Yrma) Kauffman and Brent (Danna) Kauffman, both of West Liberty; grandchildren, Levi, Wade, Ryan Kauffman, Bella, Silas and Cane Kauffman and Zane and Sam Wilkins; a sister, Peggy Grubbs of Hastings, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.
Jim graduated from West Liberty High School and attended Taylor University before graduating from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He worked as a licensed funeral director and embalmer and purchased the former Nelson Hostetter Memorial Home in West Liberty in 1966, which became Kauffman Funeral Home which he owned and operated for 10 years before merging with Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine and incorporating the two businesses into one. He retired in 1989 and went to work for Goldfinch Funeral Home in Murrells Inlet, S.C. Jim was a member of the Mad River Lodge 161 F&AM, West Liberty.
Pastor Dick Barrett officiates a graveside service at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty.
