Joseph D. Patterson, 55, of 9296 Carey Road, West Liberty, was issued summonses for assault, aggravated trespassing and menacing related to an incident Wednesday evening.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched about 8:05 p.m. to MEI, 11590 Township Road 298, East Liberty, in reference to a road rage incident that had ended at the business. Dispatchers advised that that dispute involved two men and one of the individuals was unconscious in the parking lot and was being treated by Allen Township EMS.
When deputies arrived, they said Patterson was conscious and was transported by squad to Memorial Hospital in Marysville.
David W. Winner, 32, of Mt. Sterling, an employee at the business, said he had been on his way to work driving westbound on U.S. Route 33 in Union County when he had passed a line of cars. He said Patterson was operating a vehicle in the line of cars and he observed Patterson following him when he exited U.S. 33 and drove onto the MEI campus.
Winner said in the MEI parking lot, Patterson reportedly approached his vehicle and attempted to initiate a conversation with him. However, Winner said he did not get out of his vehicle, so Patterson reportedly kicked the driver’s side door of the vehicle and attempted to open the driver’s side door.
Winner said he attempted to exit his vehicle and Patterson grabbed him. Winner told deputies he then tackled Patterson out of selfdefense.
Deputies also spoke with a passenger in Patterson’s vehicle, who stated Winner was traveling in front of their vehicle and that
Winner had applied his brakes so that Patterson nearly rear-ended the other vehicle.
Deputies met with Patterson Thursday after he was released from the hospital. He told deputies that he observed the Winner vehicle nearly cause three separate accidents. He was issued the summonses.
