The substance found at Indian Lake Middle School on Feb. 1 was not a drug as originally indicated, Washington Township Police Chief Rick Core reported this week.
The substance, found by a teacher on the floor of the middle school, was tested at the scene and appeared to be the extremely potent and potentially fatal opioid fentanyl, according to original reports. It was also packaged as illegal drugs would be, Core said.
A more thorough lab test of the powder determined it was not fentanyl.
The 12-year-old Huntsville girl accused of bringing the substance into the school has been charged with delinquency counts of inducing panic and disorderly conduct but was never charged with a drug crime, the police chief reports. The case is proceeding through Logan County Family Court.
Chief Core said he treated the incident with the same degree of caution he would have exercised in the case of a bomb scare or other threat to school security.
