MARYSVILLE — Troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a two-vehicle crash in Union County Thursday that claimed the life of a Springfield man.
James Smith, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 7:15 a.m. crash on U.S. Route 36 in Paris Township.
Troopers report he was operating a northbound car on U.S. 36 when he traveled left of center and was struck by a southbound box truck operated by Christopher Kelly, 43, of Marysville.
Kelly was transported to Memorial Hospital in Marysville for treatment of non-lifethreatening injuries.
The Ohio EPA was contacted as a result of the crash because of diesel fuel that spilled from the commercial truck.
Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash. Seat belts were used by both drivers.
Troopers were also assisted by Marysville Fire and EMS, Marysville Police Department, City of Marysville Street Department, Union County Emergency Management Agency, Ohio Department of Transportation for Union County and the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
