Tangers Furniture, 216 W. Columbus Ave., is getting a facelift which includes a restoration of the vertical sign out front.
Monday, the 1950s-era sign was detached from its moorings and lowered onto a trailer under the direction of Pat Culp of Vital Signs, the only company Tangers’ owner Brian and Mandy Osterfeld said was willing to undertake the restoration.
The Osterfelds have hired contractors to refresh the store’s front facade including an updated awning, new glass tile, masonry work and upper floor windows.
Throughout the project, the store will remain open for business, the couple said.
As for the landmark sign, it will be given a new paint job, updated electrical wiring and lights, new vinyl lettering and restored neon lighting.
It should be back in place by the end of September.
Vertical signs are making a comeback in the city after city lawmakers changed local ordinances to allow for such new signs.
East of Tangers, a sign reading “Antiques” hangs in front of Old Mint Antiques, 135 W. Columbus Ave., while at 600 Downtown, 108 S. Main St., a retro design sign proclaiming “World Famous Pizza” was installed Monday.
Crews had started the 600 project last week, but had to stop to get longer anchors for the lighted sign.
Crews returned Monday with longer anchors to finish mounting a sign proclaiming “World Famous Pizza” over the entrance to 600 Downtown, 108 S. Main St.
